- Overall
reported crime rate continues to drop annually.
- The City of
Miami Beach celebrated the Phase I completion of a $6 million streetscape
improvement project for the South Pointe area.
- The City of
Miami Beach acquired beachfront lots for the sum of $10 from the state of
Florida.
- The Marseille
Drive Streetscape Improvement Project was launched to upgrade water mains,
drainage street lighting and landscaping.
- The Miami
Beach Golf Course opened following $6.5 million in renovations.
- The Flamingo
Pool re-opened with an eight-lap pool and an interactive water playground
following a $2 million renovation project.
- The City of
Miami Beach renovated the park and recreation facilities at Flamingo Park and
the Scott Rakow Youth Center.
- The City of
Miami Beach replaced 60-year-old water lines on Collins Avenue as a part of the
Florida Department of Transportation reconstruction project.
- The Meridian
Avenue Bridge was renovated and renamed the Holocaust Memorial Bridge.
- Funds were
secured for the first time to clean the canals and were given a permanent line
item in the City budget.
- The Historic
Venetian Causeway, which at the time of its 1913 opening was the “longest wooden
bridge in the world”, completed a $29 million Florida Department of
Transportation restoration and replacement project and reopened to foot and
vehicle traffic.
- The National
Trust designated the City of Miami Beach’s Old City Hall Building located at
1130 Washington Avenue for Preservation as an official project of Save America’s
Treasures.
- Construction
began on the new and improved 47,000 square-foot Liberty Avenue branch of the
Miami-Dade County Library System. New features include: an auditorium, coffee
bar, state-of the art computer system and a children’s room.
- The Bass
Museum reopened after the completion of a five-year renovation project.
- Art Basel
/Miami Beach, sister to the world’s most prestigious international art show Art
Basel, opened to international acclaim.
- State
Homestead exemption funds were made available immediately to entitled seniors
who applied.
- Created the
Office of Homeless Coordination, which secures bed space and coordinates
services for the homeless.
- Passed an
anti-panhandling ordinance on Ocean Drive and Lincoln Road.

Miami Beach received a Standard and Poor’s (S&P) A+ rating on the City’s bonds,
which was upgraded from an AA- and received an upgrading to A1 and stable to
positive by Moody.
- The Loews
Hotel received the Council of Urban Development’s Economic Development
Partnership Gold Award, which is awarded annually to public and private partners
that have had a significant impact on the community and serve as a model to
their industry.
- The City of
Miami Beach implemented Florida’s first state-of-the art citywide electronic
parking meter mechanism.
- The City of
Miami Beach celebrates continual record-breaking growth in the film and print production
industries.
- The City of
Miami Beach was awarded the Government Finance Officer’s Association of the
United States and Canada’s Distinguished Presentation Award.
- The City of
Miami Beach received an upgrade in the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA)
Community Rating System that resulted in a 15 percent discount on flood
insurance policies for entitled property owners.
- The City of
Miami Beach hosted more than 10,000 at the National Association for the
Advancement of Colored People’s (NAACP) 75th Annual National Convention.
- The City of
Miami Beach hosted 1,700 of the world’s top producing tour operators at the
largest international travel trade show, which for the first time returned to a city
after only five years.
- Successfully
fought the campaign to repeal the Miami-Dade County Human Rights Ordinance that
bans discrimination based on sexual orientation.
